How many calories does wine have?

Skupina přátel pije červené víno ve vinném sklípku

Do you enjoy drinking a glass of wine while you’re sitting with your friends or partner at dinner? Do you know how many calories are hidden in that glass? Are there are more calories in white or red wine? Is beer or wine higher in calories? We’ll tell you everything in this article.

How many calories are in wine?

Did you know that 100 g of grapes contain approximately 77 kcal? So, how many calories will you find in the white or red wine that’s made from these grapes? White and red wines alike contain calories, but their amounts vary. In order to determine how many calories each type of wine has, we have to know two parameters – the percent of alcohol and the amount of residual sugar they contain.

You should find this information on the label on the back of a wine bottle.  However, there can sometimes be a problem determining the amount of sugar, which in some wines you’ll only recognize by its classification into certain categories – dry, sweet, semi-dry, and semi-sweet. It generally holds true that 1 g of alcohol equals 7 kcal and 1 g of sugar carries 4 kcal.

White wine – calories

How does white wine compare to red wine? White wine typically contains fewer calories. However, it’s necessary to still be aware of whether it’s a sweet or dry variety. Semi-sweet and sweet white wine can have more calories owing to the greater amount of residual sugar they contain.

How many calories are you consuming if you drink a glass of white wine?

  • Dry white wine – 124 kcal.
  • Semi-dry white wine – 146 kcal.
  • Sweet white wine – 188 kcal.
  • Semi-sweet white wine – 164 kcal.

For example, sweet white Pálava can have as many as 240 kcal per 2 dl of wine.

Red wine – calories

Red wine has more calories than white. This is due to it containing more alcohol. The calorie count is also affected by the percent of alcohol, and it’s a fact that the higher the alcohol content, the more calories are in the wine. You can therefore encounter a sweet wine that actually has fewer calories.

Approximately how many calories will you find in a 200ml glass of red wine?

  • Dry red wine – 134 kcal.
  • Semi-dry red wine – 158 kcal.
  • Sweet red wine – 210 kcal.
  • Semi-sweet red wine – 170 kcal.

For instance, Port wine boasts of as many as 320 kcal per 2 dl.

Wine vs beer – which has more calories?

Discussions about whether there are more calories in beer or wine have been going on for a long time. The truth is, beer is better for your diet than wine. A glass of wine contains, on average, about 130 kcal, whereas the same volume of beer contains only 85 kcal.

However, you should bear in mind that wine is served differently than beer – while a glass of wine usually contains 2 dl, beer is served in pints of half-liters. So if you had to decide between drinking one serving of wine or beer, wine is the clear winner in terms of calories.
