Before this wine reached your table, it had to carve a path deep underground. You see, Weingut Fries takes a slightly different approach to winemaking: they plant their vines unusually close together. This leaves the roots no choice but to push deep into the earth to find sustenance. Forcing a way through layers of slate is no easy feat.
It is precisely this struggle that gives the wine its beautiful minerality and fresh acidity. And since slate is visible everywhere you look here, the wine was named “Blauschiefer” (Blue Slate) in its honor.
