“Schützenhaus” means the gamekeeper’s lodge. And this Riesling? It certainly doesn’t shoot blindly. It hits the mark precisely, there are notes of ripe gooseberry and apricot, and a beautiful sense of fullness. Above all, there’s that balance that only time can bestow upon a wine.
The 2019 vintage is much smoother than the younger siblings. The acidity doesn’t want to push forward so much. On the contrary, actually. It’s elegantly hidden in the full body of wine.
The taste is of ripe fruits and the aroma is of herbs and gentle spices. On the palate an inconspicuous minerality develops as you drink.
If the Hattenheimer Schützenhaus vineyard was in France it would be labelled Premier Cru. These prestigious vineyards are called VDP.ERSTE LAGE in Germany. In other words: great vineyards and the absolute top quality that’s not produced by just anyone.
And perhaps that is why this Riesling is so precise, indeed. It beautifully demonstrates what a good vineyard, a good vintage, the skilled hands of winemakers, and … time… can achieve.
